Opening of the International Symposium 100 years since World War I, Gallipoli and their global consequences
Wednesday, 09 December 2015 14:19

Distinguished participants,
Ladies and Gentlemen,

As President of the Republic of Macedonia, but also as a university professor, it is an honor to be the patron of this international symposium dedicated to the battle of Gallipoli. I am glad that the cooperation between scientific and educational institutions in the Republic of Macedonia and the Republic of Turkey is expanding and enriching. We are linked by many things, including this topic.

Starting in 2014, we have been marking one century since the beginning and duration of the First World War. A single bullet shot in Sarajevo marked the beginning of the Great War, which led to the collapse of three empires. This event showed how important peace in the Balkans is for peace in Europe. That was the beginning of the short and bloody 20th century.

This year, we are remembering one of the greatest battles in the self-destructive war of Europe, but also the world. Thanks to the persistence of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the Dardanelles military campaign of the Entente powers against Turkey ended in failure. The Entente powers could not afford another defeat in the Balkans. The outcome of the Gallipoli battle was an introduction to the Macedonian front.

The Macedonian front was opened in December 1915 and stretched for 600 km, from the Aegean Sea in the East, to the Adriatic Sea in the West.

More of an object than a subject in the Great War, Macedonia was the unfortunate battlefield on which Europe was destroying itself. Almost one million troops from 20 nations grouped in tens of different armies clashed on the Macedonian front. At the front, orders were given in different languages, various flags were waved and various uniforms worn.

However, for 200.000 soldiers on that front, the only difference was the uniform they wore and the flag under which they fought. Those soldiers were the Macedonians, who had found themselves on different sides of the borders after the Bucharest agreement and were forcibly mobilized.

Dear participants,

One of our authors wrote that past can never be so remote as to not touch the present.

Ataturk, on the other hand, said Peace at home - Peace in the world. That was in the time of creation of new states. Today, when in the era of globalization, states are faced with a crisis, the reverse is valid: Peace in the world – Peace at home. The peace in every country is increasingly dependent on peace in the world.

It is sad to see that in the 21 century, in the years declared as international years of peace, there is no peace in the world.

In the Middle East and in Northern Africa, radical extremists are destroying diversity that had been cherished for centuries. Europe is facing xenophobia once again. Double standards are suspending international law and hold the international institutions hostage, making it more difficult for them to exercise the functions for which they were originally created.

With the tense relations between East and West, the situation is growing similar to the period of the Cold war. The price for this situation is being paid by Europe, which is losing its capacity to stay a unification factor.

Along with the lack of trust among states, the unpredictability in international relations is also growing.

Why is all of this happening?

According to Hegel, what we learn from history is that we have learned nothing from history. Nevertheless, we are also noticing that in conditions of globalization we strive less and less to learn something from history.

We are deprived of free time, and without free time, there is no possibility to read books or reflect. Renouncing reading and reflecting is a declaration of spiritual and intellectual bankruptcy.

This means that you, both historians and archivists, have a lot of work to do. I call upon you to open the scripts, to reread old books, to bring old testimonies to light, and thus help us learn our lessons from the past in order to avoid history repeating all over again.

With such a thought, I wish you a successful symposium.

Thank you.

Ivanov: Congratulations to Montenegro, NATO should respect international law and assumed obligations as regards Macedonia’s membership
Wednesday, 02 December 2015 12:50

The Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the 28 NATO Member Countries addressed an invitation to Montenegro, whereby it will become the 29th NATO Member Country.

We wish to sincerely congratulate the citizens of Montenegro and all of the official representatives of Montenegro on this success. Therefore, this morning I had a telephone conversation with the President of Montenegro, Mr. Vujanovic and I congratulated him on behalf of the Macedonian citizens on all the achievements thus far, including the invitation to join NATO.

As a country of this region, we share the joy for the success of every country, because the success of each country individually, contributes to the stability and security of our region as a whole. However, it has to be taken into consideration that Macedonia has long fulfilled all the conditions requested for NATO membership, but due to the blockade by our southern neighbor, we are still in a status quo position.

In the past period, I informed many world statesmen with whom I had meetings regarding this issue. At these meetings, we pointed to the consequences from the blockades and status quo position of Macedonia. Blockades provoke frustrations for our population, but also for the society in general. So far, Macedonia has proven itself to be a respected, extraordinary partner of the Alliance, since it has participated in all missions when invited, and we have also completed 16 Membership Action Plans and started the 17th so-called MAP, without having obtained what we deserve.

The situation in the world and in our region point to more frequent terrorist acts; the refugee and migrant crisis is disturbing the security in our entire region. We are facing threats that we have never had before, which implies that there is a new reality that NATO has to bear in mind when adopting its decisions.

We can no longer hold the stance that this is a political decision adopted at a Summit, when there is a judgment to be observed. This having in mind that so far, the Alliance has been referring to the necessity to respect international law and all assumed obligations. I believe the same should be applied in the case of Macedonia.

Therefore, we wish to once again congratulate the citizens of Montenegro on this success, but we expect the Alliance to take into consideration the new reality and the achievements made so far by Macedonia on its way to NATO membership.

Thank you.

Address by the President Ivanov at the Climate Summit in Paris
Monday, 30 November 2015 00:00

Excellencies,
Ladies and Gentlemen,

Today in Paris, when we are gathered in order to find peace with Nature, what is worrying is that there is no peace among people. In a time when we are trying to reach the final agreement that should enable sustainable development, a serious security storm is looming, threatening to wipe away everything that has been done previously.

Just as it is necessary to be united in the fight against terrorism, violent extremism and radicalism, we must also stand united in our efforts to reach a climate agreement.

In the same way that we need peace among peoples and nations, we need peace with Nature. Peace, on the other hand, is impossible without justice for people and Nature.

Justice has become an endangered species.
We declared ourselves masters of Nature, without being able to master our own sense of greed.
In spite of our virtually unlimited technological possibilities, we still remained limited in our sense of responsibility towards our common home.
We disturbed the fragile climate balance, the equilibrium between humankind and Nature, thus endangering the future of our descendants.

Today, we are here to try and avoid the abyss we are heading for.
Today, we are here to demonstrate that we have enough political will to face the reality of global warming.

The Republic of Macedonia has already established its national contributions to climate change.

Our position is clear. We advocate the adoption of an international, scientifically based and legally binding agreement that will be ambitious an applicable to all countries. This comprehensive agreement should contain specific steps for alleviating and adaptation to climate change, financing, capacity building and technology transfer. It should contain modalities for implementation and provide for transparency of activities, as well as support. We shall observe such a climate agreement within our capacities. This is also our position as Chairmanship of the Central European Initiative.

Here, in Paris, the circle of responsibility should finally be closed.
However, in order for this to be done, deeper changes are necessary.

We expect to see declarations transformed into specific action measures. We expect to see short term solutions being replaced with long term ones. Let us substitute the throwaway culture with a culture of sustainability. Let us move aside selfish interests for the benefit of the interests of humanity. Let us substitute superficial rhetoric with specific works. This, not because of us, but for the sake of our posterity.

Thank you.

Address at the Macedonian Economic Summit Gala
Thursday, 19 November 2015 21:11

Distinguished guests,
Distinguished Excellencies,
Ladies and gentlemen,

It is a great honor and pleasure to give you a warm welcome in the Republic of Macedonia, at the Macedonia Economic Summit.
Tonight, in ambience of the past, we talk about how to seize the opportunities of the present in order to reach the future.

When I opened this Museum 4 years ago, I personally placed in it the key documents of our statehood. One of these documents is the Declaration for International Recognition of the Republic of Macedonia as a Sovereign and Independent State. This Declaration was adopted 24 years ago. On December 19th 1991, the members of the Macedonian Parliament, regardless of their ideological, ethnic and religious background, unanimously adopted the Declaration.
Today, 24 years later, Macedonia is a recognized and respected European country, but even more than that.

Led by an exceptionally dedicated and successful economic team, in times of global economic crisis, Macedonia became an attractive business-destination.

With strenuous reforms we managed to create a favorable business climate for foreign investments. This is proven by global reports on which you have probably already been informed.

Being open to the world, we managed to build strong links and partnerships with numerous developed and growing economies both from the West and the East. Our strategic goal is NATO and EU membership, but we do not give up deepening the cooperation with all benevolent countries.

Ladies and gentlemen,

We cannot live isolated from the world which is facing serious challenges. After Paris we have a new reality in Europe that implies that neither the safest countries in the world are safe enough.

It is true that Macedonia as well went through periods of political crisis that were not easy. However, we have to bear in mind that even in such conditions, Macedonia continued to be an attractive destination for many investors, tens of thousands of foreign tourists and thousands of foreign students.

In order to see the business-opportunities provided by Macedonia, it is necessary to re-define the concept of stability. Stability does not mean an atmosphere without any political crisis, but a continuation of the rule of law and principles even during periods of political crisis. As business people you need a country that has a political will and capacity to solve the problems that you may face while doing business. And that is exactly what we continuously do.

In Macedonia you will find reliable business-partners and loyal workers. We have a relatively young, highly educated workforce that is talented and hardworking.

In Macedonia, each one of you is a desired partner, investor and employer. The doors of the state institutions are open for each one of you.
As President, I appoint all of our Ambassadors who represent Macedonia abroad. However, are there better ambassadors of Macedonia than the very people who decided to invest their capital in the country? I want you to know that for us, you are not only potential investors. You are, above all, friends of Macedonia.

Dear friends,

Some of you are businessmen of Macedonian origin. I did not mention the Declaration for international recognition by coincidence. It is a reminder that Macedonia faced difficulties during its integration in the international community. Thanks to you, the Republic of Macedonia had an open door in the cabinets of the world leaders.
My countrymen from the Diaspora often ask me what they can do for Macedonia. My answer is that they should be integrated in their second homelands as top businessmen, artists, athletes, scientists. In this way they will contribute to the success of Macedonia.

At the end, I call upon you to use the opportunities provided by our foreign-investor friendly country, and, through your success in Macedonia, to also be promoters of Macedonia.

Thank you.
