Speeches
Lecture of the President of the Republic of Macedonia d-r Gjorge Ivanov at the EGMONT Royal Institute for International Relations in Brussels
Friday, 10 September 2010 10:00

Почитуван Your Excellencies,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
It is a real honor and pleasure for me to address you here, in the heart of Europe , in this prestigious international institute that bears the glorious name of Lamoral, the Count of Egmont. He was and still is an inspiration to all those who strived to freedom and flexibility. This is exactly what I will speak about today.
Two decades ago, with the fall of the Berlin Wall, the horizon of hope for the peoples of Eastern Europe became open. Many of them now live as citizens of a united Europe . However, the military disasters on the territory of the former Yugoslavia , thousands of casualties and displaced persons, showed that the tragedy in European history was yet not over. Following the tragic last decade of the XX century, it was proven that the old continent needs badly the spirit of the visionaries and fathers of the New Europe. Then and even now, indispensable are Robert Schuman, Jean Monnet, Konrad Adenauer and all other creators of the vision of the united Europe . The followers of the creators, who erased the European borders, today have a new task, to finally crumble the borders in the Balkans, too. The Balkans, both geographically and historically, is an integral part of Europe . Europe can not be complete without the Balkans.
These creators practically demonstrated that the motto “divide, and then rule” is fatal to Europe . That divided Europe can easily become prey of its own past and destroyer of its own future. That the European progress and future will be secured only on the basis of visionary and creator principle “unite, and then lead”. Only United Europe can be a worthy leader of freedom and prosperity. Only United Europe can successfully act on the international scene and face with global challenges.
Our region nowadays needs what I call Pax Europeanae, because the European idea is a peace project. The vision of Pax Europeanae, the vision of the Republic of Macedonia and of the entire region is related to the immanent need for an open space. Open space in which there is free movement of people, ideas, capital and products, space of open borders and open minds.
Europe as an open space in which everyone enjoys his rights and bears his own identity. As open space in which everyone is respected for what he is, regardless of the place where he lives and where he works. As a space of tolerance and respect for diversity.
Particularly the experiences from the past indicate that our region has survived in peace only when there was an open space. Now the time has come again, through the Balkans, the European idea to produce peace and stability, as generations of leaders and visionaries in Europe have already done. Or, as Jean Monnet, the father of modern Europe , said:
"To build Europe is to build peace"
Now more than ever before, the Balkans needs Pax Europeana. A confirmation of that is the stabilizing role of the European Union in the Balkans.
For certain, there is no greater driving force of our societies than the integration processes. The ability of Europe to influence its neighborhood, without pressure, without force, to attract neighboring countries in its constellation of democratic and prosperous countries, is one of the greatest strengths of Europe .
In the Balkans, there is too much history and too little geography. Our region can not defeat the ghosts of the past by itself. The very recent history is a proof of this.
A decade ago, the Balkans was still recognizable by the tragedies of the victims and hundreds of thousands of displaced persons. The reoccurrence of such events can be prevented only through the integration of the region.
Painful memories of that period are still fresh for the entire Balkans, and we should further work on the healing of the wounds, preserving the memory of the things that happened. We must work still to reach reconciliation.
A decade ago the Balkans was isolated, from inside and outside, both from international embargoes and mutual blockades. Blockades that were directly felt by the Macedonian citizens. It seemed that we were far from the European ideals, light years far from the European ideals of peace, understanding and unity.
The situation in the Balkans from a decade ago has been dramatically changed. For the first time in history, at the transition from the XX-XXI century, all Balkan countries have democratically elected governments. In that one decade of democratization, a new spirit of cooperation was born. Today, the Balkan countries closely cooperate in the fields of economy, infrastructure and energy. The cooperation has been further developed and deepened in terms of security, environmental protection and culture. More and more frequent are the autochthonous Balkan initiatives for confidence building and collaboration among the Balkan peoples and societies.
Today we are witnesses of the things that only a decade ago could not be imagined. Today the countries of the region rejoice at the positive achievements of their neighbors. The success of others in the field of Euro-Atlantic integration we feel as our success.
Great is the merit of the European Union for the progress we have made so far, because the European Union is an inspiration to us all. Best example for this is the Slovenian - Croatian model. Guided by the European idea, these two neighboring countries have successfully managed to evade the vicious circle of blockades. The European idea helped these two neighbors to solve the differences in a European manner.
We, as well, are ready to bridge the differences in a European manner.
I have been doing this since May 12, 2009, the day I took the office of President of the Republic of Macedonia . Since then until today, I have sent several invitations to meet my Greek colleague, President Papoulias. Since then until today, I have taken active and committed part in all global, European and regional forums. The Republic of Macedonia continuously contributes to the security and stability in the region. This is confirmed with our position concerning Kosovo.
Although there are differences in the European positions with regard to Kosovo, however, the vast majority have accepted the independence of Kosovo.
The Republic of Macedonia , as a responsible and consistent partner, has accepted this new Balkan and European reality. Nevertheless, we have not stopped there. Not only that we recognized Kosovo, but we have started developing particularly close relationships with the youngest European country in the field of economy, energy and infrastructure. We believe the acceptance of this new reality to have stabilizing influence in the Balkans.
Yet another confirmation for this is last year's summits in Vlora and this year's summit in Prizren, where I met the Presidents of Albania , Kosovo and Montenegro . Next year, in the same period, I will be hosting this, in a way traditional format. Considering the conclusions of the previous meeting in Prizren, I hope this summit will be extended by the presence of two other neighbors, the Greek President Papoulias and the Serbian President Tadic.
Today, before this lecture at this prestigious institute, I had a meeting with the President of the European Council, Mr. Van Rompuy and I invited him to attend the summit next year. I consider that his presence will confirm the commitment of the European Union for development and promotion of cooperation in the Balkans, among the European countries that jointly build their European future. This step will positively complement our common project. It is also the best proof that we follow the majority policy of the structures we belong to.
We are European countries and together we build the European future. Maybe there are differences between us, but we do have a common guideline: a conviction that the European family of nations can not be complete without us.
Despite our deepest commitment to the European unity, to the spirit of the European democracy, despite the obvious successes, there is one issue which, unfortunately, casts a shadow on the overall regional progress. You are all well aware of the hindered Euro-Atlantic integrations of the Republic of Macedonia , due to one absurd dispute.
In the past two decades we have shown constructiveness and made serious concessions. Concessions that no other country would have made. We have made them simply because we believe that the good-neighborly relations are the basis of the European present and future.
Even since the beginning of our independence, with the amendment of the Constitution of 1992, the peaceful policy of my country was confirmed. It was shown that the Republic of Macedonia has no territorial pretensions towards its neighboring countries and that Macedonia will not interfere in the sovereign rights and in the internal affairs of the other countries.
But this did not satisfy the requirements of our southern neighbor.
Instead of recognition and integration, there was an economic blockade. At that time the Republic of Macedonia was almost completely economically cut off the world. To the north - international sanctions to the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia . To the south - parallel and unilateral embargo imposed by our southern neighbor to force us to change our name and flag. The price of the Greek embargo was paid by the Macedonian citizens. A price that can be measured in billions.
In 1993, the Republic of Macedonia made a significant step - agreed to be admitted to the United Nations under the temporary manner of addressing, with a name that refers to a non-existing country - Yugoslavia . My country made another concession by accepting to discuss the differences over the name. Although natural right of every state is to make a decision for its own name, the Republic of Macedonia met the Greek demands. Macedonia has agreed to talk in order to overcome the dispute.
Despite the steadfast constitutional and political guarantees for the rejection of any territorial claims or interference in the internal affairs of its neighbors, the Republic of Macedonia , in that period, remained internationally isolated. Despite meeting all conditions for recognition which were established by the Arbitrary Commission at the Conference on Yugoslavia , Macedonia remained unrecognized internationally. As a result of this absurd dispute, the membership of the Republic of Macedonia into the United Nations was postponed for two years, the accession to the Council of Europe for four years, and for full membership in the OSCE my country waited for four and a half years. All this happened in an extremely turbulent period of bloody and violent disintegration of Yugoslavia .
In 1995, the Republic of Macedonia made a very difficult decision that is unimaginable for almost all other countries. It was a decision to change the most important national symbol - the national flag, a symbol that identifies Macedonian citizens and hundreds of thousands of Macedonian emigrants worldwide. A symbol, which is deeply embedded in the Macedonian historical memory.
But, once again, this did not satisfy the demands of our southern neighbor.
It is a natural right and need of every country to have its own name, as a legal person has the right and need of legal identity. How can a legal person, a country without legal identity, meet the capacity for communicating with other countries? How can a country without legal identity conclude contracts and participate independently in international relations?
Despite all this, my country met the Greek requirements, and on September 13, 1995 signed the Interim Accord, an agreement intended to open the road of the Republic of Macedonia in the international organizations.
Article 11, paragraph 1 of this Accord stipulates that:
“Upon entry into force of this Interim Accord, the Party of the First Part (Greece) agrees not to object to the application by or the membership of the Party of the Second Part (the Republic of Macedonia) in international, multilateral and regional organizations and institutions of which the Party of the First Part is a member; however, the Party of the First Part reserves the right to object to any membership referred to above if and to the extent the Party of the Second Part is to be referred to in such organization or institution differently than in paragraph 2 of United Nations Security Council resolution 817 (1993)”.
The Republic of Macedonia has always adhered to this agreement. Notwithstanding, we were and still we are blocked. Despite the achieved high standards and fulfilled criteria for membership, the Republic of Macedonia today is not a NATO member. Although the request for admission was filed pursuant to the Interim Accord with Greece , in 2008, we did not receive an invitation to formally became part of the Alliance . The name was used and is still being used as an excuse for blocking the Republic of Macedonia .
Such steps do not contribute towards building security and stability in the Balkans. They are not in the spirit of European togetherness, in the spirit of global commitment to a more peaceful and more secure world, the spirit that we are fully committed to. On the contrary, blocking Macedonia 's integration only results in security vacuum in the region. I would like you to know that the blockades of the integration processes are direct blockades of the vision of Pax Europeanae. The blockade is imminent opposition to the EU and NATO objectives - peace, security, stability and prosperity. The blockade is their antithesis. The blockade is anti-European, anti-peace act. This time again, I remind myself of the warning of Jean Monnet: “The veto is a profound reason, and at the same time a symbol of incapacity to overcome national egoisms. Most often it is an expression of the deepest and unconditional blockades”.
Knowing that the vision of Pax Europeanae motivates our society, we are prepared without delay to find a solution, but a solution within the frames of the UN Resolution 817 of 1993. We want a solution, but only within the frames of the Interim Accord with Greece of September 1995. We want neither less nor more.
We consider that the naming of our nation and language is not subject of the negotiations at all because in the UN Resolutions it is clearly stipulated that only the differences over the name should be discussed.
Therefore, I would like to emphasize that neither the Republic of Macedonia nor Greece have exclusivity in using the adjective Macedonian. We have never had a problem with Greece using the adjective, but we do have a problem when we are deprived of this. Evidence of Greece ’s insincerity is the latest developments in relation to the Macedonian presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe. Greece openly opposed and still opposes the use of the term “Macedonian Chairmanship” or “Macedonian presidency”.
This proves that some politicians in our southern neighbor have problems not only with our name but with the adjective. It is the adjective and the name that reveal our identity. We showed that we are ready to help them to overcome this problem and accept the reality of Macedonia and Macedonians.
We are ready, in a European manner to bridge the differences. It means respecting the fundamental European value - respect for individual freedoms and rights. We are a European country and we require other countries to act in a European meaner towards us.
If we have shown a deep respect for all our neighbors, simply, we want our neighbors to show respect for us.
Our heritage is European. For centuries, this heritage is set in European context. Macedonia is European by definition. The Republic of Macedonia is inhabited by people from different backgrounds, religions, languages. The richness of this diversity makes Macedonia what it is. We are committed to maintain this diversity and protect the civil rights of all our citizens. Our efforts to integrate all elements in the social reality of Macedonia were many times emphasized and praised.
Obligation for each country is not to allow the rights of its citizens to be violated from any side, neither from inside nor from outside. Nobody may, nor can allow, by an act of public law, the issue of privacy, individual human rights to be touched upon - the right to self-identification and the right to human dignity. Simply, it is impossible to accept, and even less possible to implement, a solution which might have such an effect.
Therefore, I would like to point out this clearly that nobody in Macedonia will ever accept to discuss a solution that touches upon Macedonian identity and Macedonian language in the constitutional name of the state. We are fatefully experiencing the old wisdom - nomen est omen – as the name is, such are its characteristics. Our name is a reflection of an essential part of our identity. And we all know that people without identity is like a tree without roots.
We are ready, without delay, to find a solution. But I will repeat: a solution in within the frames of the UN Resolution 817 of 1993. We want a solution, but only within the frames of the Interim Accord with Greece of September 1995. We want neither more, nor less. Our hand of reconciliation is still outstretched.
I am confident that we can reach a solution. I can confirm that, unlike in the past, there is a positive climate now. This is proven by the frequent and regular meetings of the prime ministers of both countries, bilateral as well as within international forums and summits. Things are improving. The mutual trust between the leaders is being restored, trust that is for long present between our two societies, with an exception of certain individuals from both parties. A significant effort is to be made which will result in a solution.
One more thing. From Brussels , from the heart of Europe , I would like to send a clear message. I believe that the European Union can help us in particular. I believe that we can start the negotiations for EU membership. This would be an encouraging step. If a date for opening of the negotiations for the Republic of Macedonia is set, then, I am convinced that this will positively affect the stability of the entire region. It will certainly have a strong and positive effect not only on the Republic of Macedonia but also on the other countries in Southeast Europe .
Let the whole Europe live Europe .
The peaceful coexistence of different ethnic, religious or linguistic communities in Macedonia , apart from all practical everyday difficulties, is not a relict of one world that has fallen apart, but a project of the European future. What is Macedonia today is Europe tomorrow. A community of communities, a model of integration without assimilation.
In times of economic and financial crisis, we need to have more, not less Europe . The crisis may not be an alibi to stop the way of progress, to abandon the path which was outlined by the creators of Europe . On the contrary, precisely in conditions of crisis, we must return to the basic principles that have led the European unification, and which were indeed a motive to overcome the crises of the European countries at that time. The success of these proven principles of solidarity, cooperation, openness, democracy and human rights is the best recommendation, in time of a new crisis, to reconsider the wise decision that initiated the unification of Europe .
If the last crisis was overcome with openness and vision, then there is really no justification for the calls of today's economic, political and moral crisis to react by closing themselves inwardly. The fear is understandable reaction in such conditions, but fear is not good policy, fear is not a political vision at a time when decisions are expected.
In moments of crisis we expect leaders with vision to emerge. In time of crisis, visions are traced. Europe 's leadership should see the present crisis not only as a challenge but also as an opportunity.
This is my vision for Macedonia , for the Southeast Europe region and for Europe . This is my vision of Pax Europeanae. I believe in the wisdom of the European leadership.
Thank you.

Address of President Ivanov at the opening of the EPE PEMC Conference
Monday, 06 September 2010 00:00

Distinguished attendees,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
It is my special pleasure to greet you here, on the shore of the Ohrid Lake. The Republic of Macedonia has the honor to be the host of the 14th European Conference on Power Electronics and Drives. However, this is not the only contribution that Macedonia has provided thereof. It is not wide known that Mihajlo Pupin comes from a Vlach family from the beautiful village Vevchani. Mihajlo Pupin, at the same time is the most precious person Macedonia has ever shared with the world in the sphere of physics and electronics.
Respected ladies and gentlemen,
Every profession has an ideal it strives for. The ideal of astrophysics is to understand universe. The ideal of medicine is protection and promotion of health as physical, psychic, social and economic well-being of a human being. The ideal of legal sciences is respect of law and unbiased and impartial justice. Your ideal is to direct energy of the society.
As someone noted wittily, efficiency is thought-out laziness. It is known that real driving forces of progress are those individuals who find ways how to finish their tasks faster, more effective and efficient, without putting much effort. If this is true, then vast part of those individuals are here today, among us, attending this important Conference.
Notwithstanding, your knowledge results in overall benefit, improvement and success.
Distinguished attendees,
We live in times when one of the crucial issues is exactly the efficient energy exploitation; first and foremost, due to the expensive price we pay, as air pollution or economy slowdown. The investments in production development, energy usage and distribution are high on the agenda of the decision-makers in Europe and in the world. Our future and our energy systems depend on this. Indeed, the advancement and prosperity of us all, of our common home, Europe and of the humankind in general depend on this as well.
Macedonia and Europe today are faced with energy dependence. Macedonia, as European country, considers the possibilities for its inclusion in the gas pipeline system, as more efficient and cheaper source of energy.
Therefore, now is your time. We expect from you the answer how to overcome this energy dependence.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Your creativity contributes to the answer of another question, which is neither less important nor insignificant. Global warming and global efforts to reduce the harmful gas emissions are probably the greatest challenge the humankind is being faced with. Climate changes are a reality with consequences felt all over the world, both in the developing and in the developed countries.
The solution should be sought in pure, sustainable technology for future. Technology based on renewable, inexhaustible sources of energy. Hence, as I already said, now is your time.
Traditional sources of energy, including coal and water, are being less and less used, thus providing an opportunity for new alternative sources of energy to be utilized. Sources deriving from the infinite human creativity. It is the creativity that has paved the path to use solar energy. It is the creativity that gave zest to use wind and waves energy, to utilize geothermal waters. However, every answer should lead to new questions and challenges.
At the end, let me conclude with the following ascertainment – one should not let the Republic of Macedonia and Europe lag behind the other regions in the world. Our common future is particularly in the developed technology and power electronics. European energy dependence and global warming are reasons enough to promote and improve the efficiency of energy transformation and distribution systems.
It is only with joint efforts that we can succeed in providing future for the upcoming generations.
I declare this Conference open and wish you successful work.

Address of the President of the Republic of Macedonia dr. Gjorge Ivanov, on the occasion of the Day of the Army of the Republic of Macedonia
Wednesday, 18 August 2010 13:26

Distinguished members of the Army of the Republic of Macedonia,
Your Excellencies,
Ladies and Gentlemen.
It gives me great honor and pleasure to greet you exactly on this day, August 18, the Day of the Army of the Republic of Macedonia. As Supreme Commander,      I am proud of the Macedonian Army, which has exceeded all expectations in terms of its capability and commitment.
Today, we remember with pride August 18, 1943, the day when the battalion Mirche Acev was formed, which, later on, founded the Macedonian ASNOM state. The army that liberated our country and together with the allied forces fought for freedom in the world.
Celebrating the Army Day, we remember all known and unknown heroes who, through their deeds, left a legacy for us all. We remember the living witnesses and participants in the fight for free Macedonia, but also those who continue to live in our memories. I believe that this Army, this bastion of courage and patriotism, is pride for all of them.
Ladies and Gentlemen. The Army of the Republic of Macedonia is one of the foundations of Macedonia’s independence and sovereignty. Born in the dawn of Macedonian democracy, now eighteen years old, the Army of the Republic of Macedonia is guardian of the hard-won independence. The Army has been protecting our freedom and our children’s freedom. Thus, the Army fulfills its mission responsibly – it is a sovereign protector of our territorial integrity, democracy and freedom of our citizens.
I am particularly proud that the Army, as one of the pillars of Macedonian integrity and independence, is a tissue binding all the communities living in the Republic of Macedonia, regardless of the ethnicity or religious affiliation.
Macedonian Army is a symbol of military solidarity and loyalty to the common homeland of Macedonia. It is a proud guardian of the Macedonian tradition of coexistence and one of the greatest promoters of this model in the country and in the world.
Ladies and Gentlemen. Although today we celebrate the 18th anniversary of its establishment, the Army acquired and confirmed its maturity long ago.
Being faced with great challenges and implementing arduous and thorough reforms, the Army of the Republic of Macedonia is today one of the leaders of the reform process. You are an example of how a modern professional army should look like. And even more than that. The Macedonian Army, with its achievements, is a true example of the modernization of the contemporary Macedonian society.
You have fulfilled the criteria for NATO membership. You have achieved exceptional professionalism and high performance standards. That is why the Army of the Republic of Macedonia is one of the driving forces on the Macedonian path to the Euro-Atlantic integration. It is exactly you that carry the heaviest burden on this common path. A path that, I am confident, will be crowned with full membership in NATO. In this regard, we are grateful for your efforts.
Ladies and Gentlemen. The Army of the Republic of Macedonia is de facto an integral part of NATO. This can be seen best through our participation in international peacekeeping missions, missions in which our Macedonian peacekeeping troops, shoulder to shoulder with your allies, defend the common values – peace, freedom and democracy. To achieve this great mission, we share the responsibility with your allies. Along with them, we invest in the future of this global alliance.
A testimony for this are the members of the Army of the Republic of Macedonia from the last rotation within the ISAF mission. I would like to convey my special greetings to our peacekeepers and to congratulate them on the successfully accomplished mission!
An evidence for this is our participation in military exercises, in which the members of the Army of the Republic of Macedonia are regularly among the most dedicated and most diligent participants.
Also speak for this the prominent recognitions and decorations awarded to Macedonian soldiers, recognitions awarded by numerous world-known political and military leaders. I would like to assure you that the complements and praise addressed to you at the same time are complements for Macedonia. Be confident that we consider your success as Macedonia’s success.
Ladies and Gentlemen. The Army of the Republic of Macedonia has implemented the reforms and met the criteria for NATO. Notwithstanding, it must remain committed and continue on that path. It is a battle that is fought again and again, every time being better and more successful. The members of the Army in the forthcoming period must remain dedicated to the advancement of their skills. They will have to maintain the moral and pursue modernization and harmonization of the combat procedures to the new security risks.
The Macedonian Army has met the criteria for membership in the alliance. However, we shall not stop here. Proudly we go forward, in continuous realization of the great mission – professional, technically modern army defending the Macedonian freedom, an army actively contributing to the protection and development of free and democratic societies.
Without continuous investments, the acquired reform condition may easily be lost. To succeed in this endeavor, to proceed with the reforms, we need financial means. This is the only way that the Army can consistently respond to all its tasks, both in the Republic of Macedonia and abroad, along with our allies.
Therefore, in the period to come, it is necessary to increase the funds allocated for the Army.
Respected Ladies and Gentlemen. I am convinced that this Army – flag-bearer shall successfully address all the tasks and challenges that stand before us. I am also confident that we will remain proud of our Macedonian Army in future, too.
I take this opportunity to congratulate you the Day of the Army of the Republic of Macedonia, August, 18th!
Long live the Army of the Republic of Macedonia!
Long live the Republic of Macedonia!

Address of the President Ivanov on the occasion of the National Day - Ilinden
Monday, 02 August 2010 00:00

Distinguished citizens of the Republic of Macedonia,
Respected attendees,
Honorable descendants of all our known and unknown heroes who sacrificed their lives for the fatherland Macedonia,
This year, as before, we have gathered together proudly on this holy day to pay tribute to the fighters for free and independent Macedonia, to the heroes of the two Ilindens, but also to all other important events for which lives were sacrificed so that we can be on our own today. To promise them once again that the generations of today shall never forget the will they entrusted us with. We shall focus our views, aspirations, and efforts from our common past to our common present and common future. For all Macedonians, everywhere.
"…Macedonian nation is determined to lead a free life and there is not a single force in the world that can stand on our path towards full national freedom" is stated in the ASNOM First Assembly Manifesto, August 2nd, 1944, in which the following is also stated:
Macedonian nation,
The first National Assembly today comes out of the relentless struggles and bloodsheds of the best Macedonian sons; it is a symbol of your freedom and demonstrates our sovereignty and proclaims to the entire world the full national freedom of the Macedonian nation in the FIRST FREE MACEDONIAN STATE. The century-long ideal of the Macedonian nation is being achieved…
Aware of their historical task, the dream of independent and strong Macedonia has been being fulfilled by many generations of Macedonians. The ideal of the first Ilinden was achieved by the second Ilinden. We are achieving the ideal of the second Ilinden following September 8th, 1991.
Goce Delchev was the torch of the first Ilinden, Kuzman Josifovski-Pitu, stirred up the torch of the second Ilinden. They both departed prematurely but they both did a lot and timely to light up the path of their followers. They did not have luck to feel the freedom of their nation and to listen to the words of the first and the second Manifesto, but their successors know how to praise every step made for liberated Macedonia by everyone, regardless of their religious and ethnic belonging.
The importance of the first Ilinden for the second Ilinden is explained by Kuzman on August 2nd, 1943, during the Prespa Counseling, in a document celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Ilinden Uprising. The following is stated therein:
...”Today, when Macedonian nation is determined to fight for its national freedom, the memory of Ilinden shall more than ever be the light in the eyes of the entire Macedonian nation, in the eyes of all decent and freedom-loving Macedonians, all those who love their country... ”
Aware of the power of the light of the first Ilinden, Kuzman, in the second Ilinden, involved his Prometheuses: Chento, Brashnarov and a number of other patriots.
Metodija Andonov – Chento fought the Ilinden ideals to become our reality. He was strongly committed to those ideals during the preparation of the ASNOM assembly, particularly during the meeting of the Macedonian delegation on Vis. That was the reason why he was appointed the first President of the ASNOM Presidium, and is also known as the first President of Macedonia.
Panko Brashnarov, a living witness of the two Ilindens, in the opening speech during the first session of ASNOM, said:
“the life-giving well of freedom is not dried up. Macedonia was divided, the oppressions have changed, however, the struggle of the Macedonian nation has not ceased yet.”
Brashnarov was a witness and a victim of Ilinden ideals; even today we do not know where his grave is to pay our respect to him. Therefore, today, for all those who had a similar destiny, we mention his name and we bow.
Chento, who wanted the ASNOM decisions to become new Macedonian reality, ended up in prison for a whole decade. His name and his merits were erased for a long period from the books, from the history. It was even forbidden to mention his name.
Today we are living their dream. Therefore we celebrate ASNOM – the second holy Ilinden when the foundations of the Macedonian state were set. ASNOM was a confirmation that the Macedonian nation is determined to lead a free life and, as it is stated in the Manifesto: there is not a single force in the world that can stand on our path!
The flag of freedom is hoisted and it shall never be lowered again!
Respected ladies and gentlemen,
Today, we are living the freedom and independence our celebrated predecessors fought and gave their lives for. They sacrificed their lives for our freedom and for the freedom of our children. They were the sacrifice for our future and for the future of our children. Therefore, for their heroic deeds, we are grateful to them forever. With plenty of faith and with a pure heart and thought to be responsible to us, to the closest and everyone else, we have undertaken the obligation to preserve the will they entrusted us with, but, at the same time to strengthen the legacy so that some other upcoming generations, in some other new Ilindens, free from the fears concerning the future can live the ideal dreamt by Ilinden and ASNOM members and many other generations.
To be accountable to our fatherland Macedonia!
This will is inscribed in the Krushevo Manifesto – the strongest and most sincere proclamation of a given hand and a desire for coexistence. A declaration based on the notion that freedom is not a result only of force but also of hope and conscience. A manifesto based on the acknowledgment that freedom is just and cannot sustain unjust.
A will that contains the ideals of Ilinden – fight against tyranny and oppression, fight for freedom, justice and equality. Fight for Macedonia!
A will which is referred to in Article 1 of the ASNOM Declaration on Fundamental Rights of the Citizen of Democratic Macedonia: „ All citizens of the Macedonian state shall be equal before the law, regardless of their nationality, gender, race and religion“.
A will which is referred to in Article 2 of this Declaration: „All rights of free national life shall be guaranteed to the national minorities in Macedonia. “
We have been fulfilling this will and therefore we protect Macedonia and its integration without assimilation. From the very beginning, the governments and the public life have depicted this Macedonian reality. Since the Constitution of the Provisional government “Edinstvo (Unity)”, through the Krushevo Republic, the ASNOM Presidium and all the governments of independent and autonomous Macedonia. In all of them, the communities used to have and still have their representatives who institutionally articulate and direct their needs and interests. Besides Macedonians, also Albanians, Turks, Serbs, Roma, Vlachs, Bosniaks are included and all those who live in the Republic of Macedonia
Dear all,
We are fulfilling the will. The Republic of Macedonia, since 1991, has been diligently attached to the ideals of the celebrated Krushevo Republic and the state-building ASNOM. The Republic of Macedonia is a democratic and a rule of law country, based on respect of human rights and freedoms. A country recognized for its openness, openness towards all those who live therein but also towards the neighbors in the region.
This Macedonian openness is naturally attached to the noble idea of the European Union, the idea for United Europe. Our openness is part of the vision for European peace, which understands Europe as united and open space, space where tolerance and diversities are celebrated, where everyone can enjoy his rights and bear his own identity, space where relations between countries are based on cooperation, openness, democracy and respect of human rights but also respect of human dignity.
Macedonia and the Balkans today live with this idea for united Europe. Europe we genuinely belong to. Therefore, Macedonia and the Balkans are earnestly devoted to the efforts for overcoming, conciliation and integration.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
I would like to underline that, as a state, we do not remain silent before the challenges; we face the challenges courageously and responsibly, as it suits Macedonia.
For the Macedonian persistence and commitment speaks the fact that we managed to solve all open issues concerning our borders. That makes us the only country from the former Yugoslav countries with closed border issues with its neighbors.
A testimony for the Macedonian persistence is the good relations with almost all of our neighbors. I have a personal contribution to this, during the frequent meetings I have with the respective country leaders. Macedonia is a state that can openly speak for the future of the region with all, speak about networking, conciliation, about open issues bothering our region, and speak about common infrastructure, energy future, environment, common strategic goals.
I would like to assure you, that, as a region, we do not run away from the problems. We have inherited some of the problems and we have created some of the problems. We face and overcome such challenges proudly, as it is appropriate to the historical mission of this generation of leaders, a mission of historical reconciliation and integration of the Balkan nations within the European family of democratic countries.
The promotion of a policy of openness towards all has not been present only in the region, but it is being spread beyond. The results of such approach are more than evident and realistic. Here, I also have my personal contribution during the meetings I have with European and world leaders. Macedonia will always take care of its interests and need not justify this. However, Macedonia will take care of the common interests of Europe and for the peace in the world. That is why our soldiers and officers are present in all peacekeeping missions we are invited to take part in.
Dear all,
Such positive steps reaffirm the old truth that the issues and the problems can only be solved in a dialogue. That communication restores confidence between parties. Those who communicate can be integrated. Permanent and sustainable solutions can be built only with sincere commitment and conscience for our common past, common present and common future.
Through intensive regional cooperation not only we contribute to conciliation but we support and facilitate the path of the entire region to the European integrations. A synergy we need forever.
Nowadays, for the first time after long historic epochs of tyrannies and despotisms, there is an ambiance in which all countries in our region have democratic elected governments and demonstrate a desire and need to unify this region, from the bad past to common and prosperous present and future. Unity based on mutual respect and understanding, cooperation and friendship. Unsustainable and unfavorable are the old bargainings and alliances, only in favor of one party and to the detriment of other parties.
Our region, our continent, which used to live together only when there was peace, cannot be divided with administrative barriers. Macedonia used to be, is and shall be in Europe, diligently and freely.
The European experience teaches us that it is possible those who were enemies to prosper together, in parallel, avoiding the possibility their success to be detrimental to the others. An experience that teaches us that the success and progress do not belong only to one party and that other parties are to be deprived of it.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Apart the obvious successes, there is one question which, unfortunately, is a dark shadow on the overall regional growth. The blockade of our integration to the EU and NATO by our southern neighbor is not contributing to the stability in the region. The blockade is not corresponding to the EU and NATO objectives – peace, security, stability and welfare. On the contrary, the blockade is antithesis of such objectives.
Some of our southern neighbor politicians have problems with our name and our identity. Therefore, I would like you to know that we are here to help them overcome this problem and accept the reality of Macedonia and Macedonians.
Therefore, I stress: the Republic of Macedonia has proven many times now that is ready for a dialogue, for meetings and communication as the sole manner of overcoming the differences. We have given our hand of reconciliation and understanding many times before, and we are still offering our hand.
Dear all,
Our goal is advanced, economic and democratic developed country, fully integrated in NATO and in the European Union. We are sincerely and committedly striving towards these organizations we naturally belong to.
Our greatest value is our perseverance to identity and integrity protection. A value on which the EU and NATO are based. The countries which are not self-persistent cannot be persistent and open to other countries. Therefore, only as Macedonia and as Macedonians are we a contribution to Europe and to the world.
The membership within these two communities means clear criteria. The EU and NATO have the right to require fulfillment of the membership criteria. However, along with this right are the responsibilities they are supposed to be aware of and fulfill duly. On the other hand, Macedonia has been fulfilling its responsibilities and tasks.
Therefore, I urge our allies to accept formally our membership in the Alliance. We already participate respectfully in assisting the regions that produce instability.
Therefore, I urge our European partners to remain faithful to the deeds of the great visionaries and architects of Europe. May they not let the financial bankruptcy lead to moral bankruptcy.
Therefore, I urge Greece to accept that we exist and will exist as their sincere neighbors and friends. To adhere to the examples of historical settlements and conciliation which bring lasting peace to Europe.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
On this day, right from this place which teaches us that freedom is achieved by perseverance and unity, I want to send a clear message. We should be aware of the responsibility we have because we are in a turning point for our country.
We are witnesses of disturbing events which lately shake the political scene in the Republic of Macedonia.
We are witnesses that other neighboring countries have similar disagreements and turmoils to the detriment of their integration processes.
The participation in the political competition understands fair play, without illegitimate pressure and non-constructive actions. It is a contest in which the previously set, known and accepted rules are respected. At the end, winners of such contests are the fatherland and its citizens.
Therefore, I urge – the participation in the political processes has no alternative, particularly for the political factors and actors who made a decision to demand confidence of the citizens at elections.
Therefore, I urge to stop with the daily-political divisions! Only unanimous and united in the strategic determinations can we endure on our path forward. A path that will lead us to the goal which unites the citizens of the Republic of Macedonia, irrespective of their religious, ethnic or political affiliation. We already feel the concrete benefits of the reforms, of the visa liberalization. Only together can we manage to fulfill our historical mission. Prosperous and rich European Macedonia.
Distinguished citizens,
We are not afraid of the success.
We are bound on our past; we are bound on the ideals of our predecessors. We are responsible for the current generations, but also for the upcoming generations. We shall not forget that the time we live in we borrow from the future generations. We should leave them more prosperous, richer and more united Macedonia.
Descendants and followers of Delchev, Gruev, Karev, Guli, successors of celebrated Brashnarov, Chuchkov, Pitu, Agoli, Chento- may we celebrate Ilinden for many years!
May freedom and independence last eternally!
Long live the Republic of Macedonia!

The address of President Ivanov at the joint press conference with with the President of Latvia Vladis Zatlers
Thursday, 15 July 2010 00:00

Respected media representatives,
At the outset I would like to express my satisfaction that after the two meetings we have had in the last 6 months with President Zatlers in the US and in Qatar, we meet again today in Macedonia. This official visit is recognition of the development of the friendly relations and cooperation between our two countries.
We had very constructive talks with President Zatlers and exchanged opinions on how to intensify the bilateral relations. We discussed issues of common interest on multilateral level, regional issues and particularly the Republic of Macedonia’s aspirations for EU and NATO membership.
Certainly, on of the topics we discussed was the issue that hinders out Euro-Atlantic integration processes. I acknowledged President Zatlers with the current developments in the process led under UN auspices regarding the irrational problem that our southern neighbor has concerning our constitutional name. I briefed him in details that besides all the appeasements we have made so far, the Republic of Macedonia participates actively and constructively in the process for resolving this issue with a mutually acceptable solution.
With President Zatlers, we reached a joint conclusion that the key national priority of the Republic of Macedonia is to open the negotiations for EU accession as soon as possible, due to the fact that the integration processes are extremely important cohesive and motivating mechanism in our multicultural society. I also expressed my expectation the Republic of Latvia should make all its efforts to make the Union put aside this bilateral issue from the decision for opening the accession negotiations with the Republic of Macedonia.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
We agreed with President Zatlers that we should focus our attention to facilitate the economic and other forms of cooperation by promoting the legal framework – in the sphere of economy, health care system, education, science, culture, civil-legal matters. The signing of the Memorandum of understanding between our two Defence Ministries today, establishing the legal framework for future cooperation, is only a beginning of this cooperation.
Availing myself of this opportunity I would like to extend my gratitude for the Republic of Latvia’s principled support to the Euro-Atlantic aspirations of the Republic of Macedonia and in this context I would like to underline that the Republic of Macedonia considers the Republic of Latvia a real partner and supporter on the path to full Euro-Atlantic integration.
Once again, Mr. President, thank you for accepting the invitation and for the expressed support for Macedonia, I am convinced that the cooperation between our two countries will be intensified and that we will continue to develop our friendship by introducing new forms and contents.
Thank you for your attention.

Address of the President at the opening of the Ohrid Summer Festival
Tuesday, 13 July 2010 05:44

Distinguished Guests, еxcellencies, ladies and gentlemen.
It gives me a great honor and pleasure to extend my greetings to you here, in Macedonia’s and Balkan’s pearl, our spiritual and cultural capital, the city of Ohrid.
Tonight we are celebrating the golden jubilee of our widely renowned international festival, the Ohrid Summer Festival. A festival that, through its program and openness towards the audience and the artists, is pride both of Ohrid and Macedonia.
Right here, in Ohrid, the audience, time and again, can discover and enjoy the masterworks of the music geniuses such as Beethoven, Bach, Mozart, but also Chopin, Schumann and Mahler, the three great composers whose anniversaries we celebrate this year.
Is there a more natural place to acclaim the half-century old perseverance of this festival than here, in this centuries-old temple of scene, vocal and music art? A temple in which the citizens of Lychnidos used to experience the masterpieces of the ancient drama masterminds, a temple that today echoes with the works of the great Macedonian, European and World composers, actors, artists.
Respected Ladies and Gentlemen, art does not recognize any borders or divisions. The civilization role of music and art in general is to be the greatest architect of coexistence and common future of peoples and communities. Therefore, the artists were, are and will always be the messengers of peace, tolerance and understanding. They were, are and will always be the main bridge-builders that interconnect us all.
During its long-lasting existence, this festival paved the path to fame for many artists from Macedonia and from other countries as well.
The Ohrid Summer Festival became the second home for many world famous interpreters such as the virtuosi Kogan, Szeryng, Navara, Carreras, Zubin Mehta and Jessie Norman, but let us not forget the numerous reputable Macedonian artists, such as Ana Lipsha Tofovik. This festival has been enriched also by Macedonian and Balkan actors and directors who constantly bring life to the works of both classical and contemporary authors.
Aware of the significance of this festival, we are dedicated to creating conditions for elevating the program with comprehensive contents, including both proven and rising stars, present and future ambassadors of culture.
The Ohrid Summer Festival has exceeded the expectations. This is the reason why, today, I awarded the Festival with the highest decoration, the Medal of Merits for Macedonia, for the long-lasting and successful promotion of Macedonian culture and affirmation of the Republic of Macedonia throughout the world.
Dear Guests, anticipating the concert of the esteemed Russian National Orchestra conducted by maestro Pletnjev and our precious Simon Trpcevski, who, with the power of art, introduced Macedonia to the world map, I believe that we all together wish for many more summers filled with art.
Thank you.
