The President of the Republic of Macedonia, Dr. Gjorge Ivanov, in the U.S. city of Tucson, in the state of Arizona, opened the Honorary Consulate of the Republic of Macedonia.
The title of Honorary Consul in this industrial city in the south of the United States went to the longtime activist for the rights of Macedonia, Jason Miko.
Miko is a former close associate of President Boris Trajkovski, advocate of Macedonia in Washington, columnist in Dnevnik and one of the authors of the movie "A Name Is a Name" in which the Macedonian views on the name dispute with Greece are presented to the foreign audience.
- Jason Miko is one of the many Americans who come to Macedonia to help us. Relations between Macedonia and the United States are not only friendly, it is a partnership. We are really grateful to the United States, to the State of Arizona, and to Jason Miko for their efforts for Macedonia, for the collaboration with his great friend, and my friend, President Trajkovski. Because we are together in all peacekeeping operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, and wherever we are called, President Ivanov said on the occasion of the opening of the Consulate.
Miko briefly presented Macedonia as a country from which many can learn about tolerance and friendship and as a country that implements economic reforms to ensure prosperity for its citizens.
- I think that God's providence sent me to Macedonia, and I must mention my favorite quote from the Bible - that night Paul had a vision: a man from Macedonia pleaded him, "Come over to Macedonia and help us! Macedonians certainly want to come over to them, to visit them. As a Honorary Consul, I will look for ways to better promote Macedonia here in Arizona, Miko said.
Macedonian Ambassador to the U.S., Zoran Jolevski in his speech recalled the cooperation with Miko, in the Cabinet of late President Boris Trajkovski.
- With his views on many issues, Jason Miko secured a special place in many Macedonians. Therefore, it was our great honor to offer him to be the Macedonian Honorary Consul in Arizona and we are proud to represent our country, Jolevski said.
The opening of the Consulate was attended by representatives of the Macedonian community in Arizona and authorities of the U.S. federal state. The seat of the Consulate will be in Russell Public, a public relations company.
Matt Russell, Director of Russell Public, said that he is proud that his company will be the seat of the Honorary Consulate and said that he will continue to work on developing relations between Macedonia and USA.
- It is really a great honor for Russell Public to be a company hosting the Honorary Consulate of Macedonia. I have had the opportunity to work with Jason Miko, the Honorary Consul. I have learned a lot about Macedonia from him, for your people, culture. We are really proud that we can participate in promoting the good news for Macedonia and for your people, Russell said.
President Ivanov is to continue his visit to the U.S. in Phoenix, where he will deliver a lecture at the Arizona State University and will visit the city of Tempe, a sister city of Skopje, which is a cooperation hub between the two countries in this part of the United States.
In Arizona, President Ivanov is to participate in Sedona Forum, a gathering of high political and business representatives from the U.S., but this year leaders from Eastern Europe are invited to attend the Forum.
The Forum, under the auspices of the leading Republican Senator from Arizona, John McCain, will be attended by Vice President Joe Biden, whose White House portfolio includes the developments in the Balkans. The Sedona Forum is to be attended by Senators Lindsey Graham, John Kiel, Kelly Ayotte, retired Senator Joe Lieberman, Canadiaa Defence Minister Peter MacKay, CEO of General Electric, Jeff Immelt and CEO of Walmart - Bill Simon, President of Georgia Mikhail Saakashvili, former Prime Minister of Russia Mikhail Kasyanov, dissident leader from Belarus Andrei Sannikov and other participants.
