The President of the Republic of Macedonia, Dr. Gjorge Ivanov sent a message that it would be of great importance, not only for Macedonian citizens, but for the entire region, if the European Council enacts a decision to set a date for opening the negotiation talks during the Belgian presidency. The President stated this at the joint press conference with the President of the European Council, Herman van Rompuy in Brussels.
- I informed President Rompuy on all actions that Macedonia has been undertaking to overcome the obstacle with Greece and that I hope that soon we will leave it behind us - President Ivanov said.
The President said that he conveyed his expectations of the Macedonian people and their Euro-enthusiasm to Rompuy. Macedonian President said that he sees the region as part of a united Europe.
- The EU is making great efforts to reach a solution for the name dispute. Now is the moment when the two countries should discuss and find a solution that is acceptable to both sides - Van Rompuy said after the meeting.
Rompuy said that Macedonia's entry into the EU is a very important step for the country. Investing great efforts to implement all reforms for the EU membership, as he said, would mean a positive report for Macedonia by the European Commission in November.
As President Ivanov briefed, at the meeting with the President of the European Council Macedonia’s achievements and future challenges were discussed, stating that in that regard Rompuy had a great understanding.
President Ivanov, who was accompanied by Foreign Minister Antonio Milososki in Brussels, during the two-day working visit, apart from the meeting with Rompuy, today met with the President of the Belgian Chamber of Representatives, Andre Flahaut.
The purpose of the meetings President Ivanov had with the European officials was to discuss the progress of our country and to appeal for a positive report and a date for opening the negotiations.
