In a democracy, it is usual all the divisions to be evident and on the surface, and this is promoted by the parties, so everything that happened in the past, everything that comes from the past, creates divisions among us; what unites us comes from the future, from the goal and the commitment of Macedonia to be a member of the EU and NATO, thus the unity is never in favor of all those who are trying to impede the future of Macedonia. - The leaders of the Albanian parties from the opposition did not attend the recent informal meeting, called upon your invitation. They provided an explanation for not attending the meeting. What is your opinion on this? Is it possible to organize such a meeting which will be attended by all invited parties?
- In your opinion, what is the greatest threat to the stability and security in Macedonia? If we consider the situation in the region 20 years ago, 10 years ago, we will see that there are drastic changes, that, as a country, we were really exposed to everything that the region was exposed to, but the situation is now changing. However, gray zones still remain. There are individuals who are trying to function nowadays in the same manner as they used to function in the past. So, we are exposed to the same things that every country on the planet is exposed to. There are individuals, criminal structures that do not favor order and the rule of law, they want to earn profit in these gray zones, deal with illegal activities, they just want to profit from the inexistence of order in certain parts. In my opinion, such threats existed and will exist, there will be individuals, criminal structures, there will be some individuals who simply want to create certain perception that the entire region is still unstable, but you see, the situation is changing very quickly, unity is created very rapidly, stability was established in the entire region which is necessary for the whole region to enjoy the benefits from the Euro-Atlantic integration. - Macedonia is not a NATO member state due to the dispute over the name with Greece, and it seems, the same will be with the EU membership. It seems that Greece has no intention to change its position, so do you see a way out? There is a way out. Therefore, there is a bilateral agreement with Greece that exists, which was passed for Greece not to obstruct our integration. However, I have not yet seen any desire or a kind of a pressure on Greece to respect what it had adopted and signed. Other solution is Greece to finally acknowledge the reality that a state Macedonia, Macedonian nation and Macedonian language exist. However, unfortunately, there are still politicians in Greece, who use the rhetoric of the Cold War and arouse fears and prejudices among the population that if a state Macedonia exists, their territory, their integrity is in danger. So, I do not think it serious that, in the 21st century, such issues are opened and profit is made out of them. We have shown that we are committed to good neighborly relations, therefore we changed the flag, we changed the Constitution and in the process led in the UN on finding mutually acceptable solution, we make all our efforts and we are constructive. However, we do not see such a signal and commitment from the other party. Probably they consider they should postpone and postpone this issue and as long as they act from a position of power, they will have capacity to obstruct our integration in the Euro-Atlantic structures. - Has Macedonia alternative if Greece does not accept a compromise and the country remains outside NATO and the EU? All our energy, all our visions, the idea that unites us is exactly NATO and the EU, and therefore we were committed and met all the criteria both for NATO and for the EU; actually this mobilized our society and our institutions and we were eager to meet all these standards, principles, values which were required from us, thus we simply do not require anything more or anything less than what is required from the other states. But we are really brought by our neighbor in a situation that certain structures start seeking alternatives. There is no alternative for our region except the one we have chosen. Indeed the world is changing very quickly, new actors emerge on the political scene, globally there are new actors and new processes, but we have a general determination and we persevere in it. Therefore we are making our best, through the process led by Mr. Nimetz, to reach certain solution, which will be mutually acceptable. However, we cannot accept solutions offered by Greece to be presented as mutually acceptable solutions, i.e. Greek proposals to be presented to us as our own proposals. - Is there pressure on Macedonia and on the President personally by the international factors in finding a compromise with Greece over the name dispute? Regular meetings are organized, we have contacts, guests, we really stay in contact and communication with all responsible stakeholders in NATO and the EU integration process. However, there is no open pressure, there is an indication that we should come to a solution and we are aware that we must come to a solution and therefore we say that we are the ones that need the solution, it is not Greece that needs the solution, and we do not feel that Greece takes any action that will contribute in finding the solution as soon as possible, and maybe Greece is in favor of a strategy it implemented towards Cyprus and now has chosen the same strategy towards us, it prolongs the problem, simply creates an ambience that it should last as long as conditions are created for something that is beneficial for them. But we really do everything in order to point out that the international law, what is in the UN resolutions and in the UN Charter, should be valid for us as for every other country, because we, as a country, have the need of dignity, pride and respect of the international order, too. Unfortunately, there is little understanding among certain structures in Greece and this complicates, burdens the process, because 20 years ago they managed to mislead the international community, this is still present in certain structures, it is still dominant. Greece has the opportunity to express all its views to President Obama, Ms Merkel, all prime ministers, presidents in Europe, because they are inside the institutions, and when they come to us they present their positions, and we say: let us express our views, let us express our position and what is necessary for this country. |
