KIRO GLIGOROV (1991 - 1999)The first President of the Republic of Macedonia Kiro Gligorov, was a politician who remained influential and respected on the Macedonian political scene before and after country's independence. Born in Stip on May 3rd, 1917, Gligorov graduated at the University of Belgrade’s Faculty of Law. During the World War II, President Gligorov participated in the in the national liberation struggle against the fascists, being also a Secretary of the Initiative Committee of ASNOM and responsible for finance in the ASNOM Presidium (Finance Commissioner). He held several high political and economic positions in SFR Yugoslavia - Secretary of State for Finance in Federal Executive Council, member of SFRY Presidency, as well as President of the Assembly of SFRY. Following Macedonia’s independence, Gligorov was elected President in 1991. He served as President in two terms, until November 1999. After his retirement from the active political life, President Gligorov was active through his Foundation named by him. He was author of many books, among which is the well known “Macedonia is All We Have”. Kiro Gligorov passed away in Skopje on January 1st, 2012 at the age of 94.
BORIS TRAJKOVSKI (1999 - 2004)
The second President of the independent Republic of Macedonia, Boris Trajkovski, was born in the village of Monospitovo, Strumica, on June 25th 1956. In 1980, he graduated on the Faculty of Law in Skopje, specializing in business and labour law. Trajkovski is a leading activist of VMRO-DPMNE’s international cooperation program and President of the Pan-European Movement of the Republic of Macedonia. In 1998 he was appointed Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs. In December 1998 he was elected second President of independent Macedonia. President Boris Trajkovski died tragically along with eight of his associates in a plane crash on February 26th 2004 in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Boris Trajkovski was married to Vilma Trajkovska, with whom he has two children.
International Foundation Boris Trajkovski BRANKO CRVENKOVSKI (2004 - 2009)
President Branko Crvenkovski was born on October 12th 1962 in Sarajevo. His political career is marked by the most important posts in the country, such as President of the country, President of the Government of the Republic of Macedonia and president of the Social-Democratic Union of Macedonia, a party he leads after the end of his presidential mandate. Crvenkovski was elected President of Macedonia’s first partisan Government in September 1992. Following the 1994 general elections, he won his second mandate as President of the Government. After the electoral defeat in 1998, he headed Macedonia’s opposition. Following the 2002 electoral success, he was again elected as President of the Government. After the tragic death of President Trajkovski, Branko Crvenkovski ran as a candidate on the 2004 Presidential elections. President Crvenkovski graduated as electro-technical engineer. He is married to Jasna Crvenkovska, with whom he has two children. |
