Distinguished President of the Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts, Academician Kambovski, Honorable members of the Macedonian Academy, Esteemed guests, Ladies and Gentlemen,
With great pleasure I accepted the invitation to address you at this important anniversary - 45 years since the establishment of the Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts. Anniversaries are always a good opportunity to remember what has already been created and achieved and to look to the future. In 1967, the temple of the Macedonian science and art was established. Temple, which over the years, was the intellectual space where numerous and important deeds were created.
Many new buildings have been built on the foundations of old houses, just as each and every generation goes further than the previous one, because it stands on the shoulders of the previous generation. The Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts was established on the shoulders of the Macedonian teachers, scientists and top intellectuals and artists.
Today, 45 years after its establishment, MANU has a historic opportunity and generational responsibility to enable future generations its genuine purpose - to be generator of the development of science and scientific activity in the Republic of Macedonia, to support, widespread and promote the Macedonian art in the country and in the world, to be the foundation of the Macedonian art and science. Foundation on which new generations will be able to build bridges of connection with the world science and art.
Everything that has been created over the years remains as contribution which is appreciated in the Republic of Macedonia and beyond. Let us recall the numerous scientific research projects and papers in the field of linguistics, social and medical sciences, in the field of natural sciences and mathematics, bio-technical and technical sciences and the arts. In the past decades, within MANU, Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, Energy, Informatics and Materials, Areal Linguistics, Lexicography Research and Strategic Research centers were established. Some of them have become recognizable in broader terms.
I avail myself of this opportunity today, when we celebrate this great and important anniversary, to express my gratitude for everything you have done for the Republic of Macedonia, Macedonian science and art. This center of knowledge, science and art has a responsible role. It is the role of an important social corrector, from which society expects views, suggestions and opinions on key issues affecting the Republic of Macedonia, both in the field of science, and in the field of culture, not excluding the economy, and all the other aspects of social life. I believe that MANU will put entirely, for the purpose of finding solutions to all the issues we are facing, its accumulated knowledge, experience and wisdom. I would also like to use this opportunity to encourage you to work on connecting with the world scientific and research centers and with the global academic centers.
Esteemed guests, New challenges are awaiting us, requiring science and art to be more present and voiced, not only in the Republic of Macedonia, but also beyond. Those are the challenges and tasks for a modern, open and progressive institution, open to the future generations, to new sciences, to new realities.
Aware that academies are not just places to store knowledge, but institutions offering solutions to the problems and challenges of this and of the future generations. Generations that need to analyze and solve problems. Therefore, it is necessary to open the door to modern scientific disciplines. Disciplines that are not built around functions and institutions, but around issues, results and solutions.
Time is not waiting, it quickly leaks away. New changes in modern technology happen, with or without us. The greatest benefit will be enjoyed by those individuals, societies and countries that will be actively involved in the global competition and will be competitive in the global marketplace of ideas and technologies. The question is whether we will wait others to offer us solutions, or we are going to be part of those solutions that are needed to the world.
I am convinced that these 45 years give us a good basis for confidently and boldly move forward. We should seriously think of deepening the partnership between science, state and business, for the sake of the Republic of Macedonia and its citizens. Partnership that should reflect reality and the role of science in the 21st century, century of new technologies, new approaches, century, in which MANU should be an active stakeholder in the global scientific community.
What is the reality of the 21st century? We live in a time of dynamic science. Time of multimedia art. Science is more applicative, practically applicable, which leads to solving real citizens' needs. In the Republic of Macedonia, we are in need of tangible, applied, applicative science, which will offer practical solutions.
Science is interdisciplinary. The tree of science planted by Aristotle has changed dramatically. When it comes to natural sciences, we are witnessing a dynamic process of academic grafting and connecting the tree of knowledge and science, which produces new disciplines and new scientific fruits.
Ladies and Gentlemen, As part of my visits to foreign countries, I often meet Macedonian scientists doing serious research in some foreign research centers. My vision is these researchers to do that here, in Macedonia. Our intention is these proven Macedonian researchers to bring their knowledge, experience, their visions and ideas here, in the Republic of Macedonia.
The key is in the painstaking creation of a dynamic generational vertical, based on mutual respect and love for science and art. It is necessary to create generational responsibility and to fill in the vacuum that exists between the generations of scientists and artists. As a university professor, I have educated more generations of political science students. Many of you have done the same with many more generations. I believe that everyone will agree with the view that indispensable is the feeling of fulfillment when you see young people succeed. The desire of every good teacher is to be reached and surpassed by his students.
We are aware of the limitations that we have as a country. But we are also aware of the great potential that we possess - human innovative and creative mind. The Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts should continue to be a hotspot and a beacon of the innovative and creative Macedonian spirit. Beacon that will guide young Macedonian scientists to the best scientific and research centers in Europe and the world, to return them again in Macedonia, with the accumulated and applicable knowledge. I believe it will be the biggest investment in young scientists. I believe it is the best way for the Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts to achieve its important mission.
Thank you.
