Statement by President Ivanov regarding today’s decision of the International Court of Justice in Hague

Respected citizens of the Republic of Macedonia,

Today we are witnessing an extremely important ruling of the International Court of Justice in favor of the Republic of Macedonia.

This judgment is a clear confirmation and justification which provides additional international reputation of the state policy of the Republic of Macedonia led throughout the past period.

The highest international law judicial authority ruled that Greece has violated the Interim Accord by objecting our NATO membership.

The Republic of Macedonia, therefore, requires Greece, as the International Court of Justice requires, to respect and effectively implement the Interim Accord, being the sole document that regulates the relations between our two countries.

Instead of blocking us, Greece should support our integration into international organizations in accordance with the Interim Agreement.

The International Court of Justice confirmed that the Republic of Macedonia has not violated the Interim Accord, thus rejected all objections of Greece. Such a responsible attitude is a permanent commitment of the Republic of Macedonia. We remain fully committed to comply with the Interim Agreement. Constructively, as before, in good faith, we will respect the framework in which the negotiation are led, under the UN auspices, and we will participate in this process in order to find a mutually acceptable solution.

We urge Greece to act as responsibly as we do in relation to the Interim Agreement and to respect the judgment of the International Court of Justice. We ask Greece to accept the ruling of the International Court of Justice that the Republic of Macedonia has not breached the obligation of good neighborly relations provided for in the Interim Agreement.

For the time being, we do not want to look through the categories of winners and losers. We need to work together with Greece on our common future and the future of our region. We, again, stretch out our hand of friendship and good neighborly relations to Greece.

We see this ruling as a positive impulse and we count on cooperation with our Greek neighbor in a spirit of friendship, understanding and mutual respect.

Thank you.
