As a diplomat and Ambassador I assure you, Mr. President, that I will be an avid student of your country's politics and interests, nature and culture landscape, economy and society and, most important, a friend who is available and accessible in building cooperation. Modern diplomacy should be based on identifying common grounds, interests and needs. No one can decide or judge for someone else its priorities and policies; rather, we should learn from each other's experiences and share know-how with friendly nations, Ambassador Amrani said at the ceremony, conveying assurances of highest consideration on behalf of the Israeli President Shimon Peres.

Letter to President Gul marking 20 years of diplomatic relations established between Macedonia and Turkey
Sunday, 26 August 2012 09:16

On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Republic of Macedonia and the Republic of Turkey on August 26, 1992, the President of the Republic of Macedonia, Dr. Gjorge Ivanov, sent a letter to the President of the Republic of Turkey, Abdullah Gul. Please find below the integral text of the letter.

Distinguished Mr. President, Dear Friend,
It gives me great honor and huge pleasure, on the occasion of the 20th anniversary since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Republic of Macedonia and the Republic of Turkey, on August 26, 1992, on behalf of the citizens of the Republic of Macedonia and on my personal behalf, to convey expressions of respect and appreciation, as well as the desire to share with you the importance of this date for our two countries.

The establishment of diplomatic relations between our two friendly countries happened in a turbulent time, in a period when the new reality in the Balkans, the new independent state, the Republic of Macedonia, was questioned, contested and denied. Looking back into these two decades, today we are aware of the significance of your country’ move, which facilitated the process of international recognition of the statehood, independence and wider affirmation of the Republic of Macedonia in the international community.

I am pleased to say that we leave behind us twenty years in which the overall relations and cooperation between the two friendly countries have been in continuity and successfully built, promoted and deepened. Today, the relations are characterized by exceptionally high political level and developed cooperation in many areas, established legal framework of bilateral documents, spirit of friendship, mutual understanding and respect, and shared economic interests with a common imperative for further strengthening. Therefore, today, I would like to stress particularly the high appreciation and gratitude we have for the strong and principled support we receive wholeheartedly from the friendly Turkey in meeting our strategic goals, membership in NATO, the EU and in building the Republic of Macedonia as a modern democracy in which coexistence, dialogue and respect for diversity is a reality.

Distinguished Mr. President,
For these benefits, of utmost importance is the political dialogue at all levels. I want to assure you that in the spirit of the established friendship, I am ready, along with you, to further contribute to the strengthening of the relations and cooperation between our two countries.

At the end, I wish you and the citizens of the Republic of Turkey further successes. I wish you personally good health, personal happiness and success in the execution of the exceptionally responsible function. Anticipating the next opportunity to meet you again, please accept the assurances of my highest consideration.

Dr. Gjorge Ivanov

Friday, 24 August 2012 17:02

The President of the Republic of Macedonia, Dr. Gjorge Ivanov, today in Ohrid had a meeting with Mr. Kurt Volker, CEO of McCain Institute for International Leadership, former US Ambassador to NATO and former Deputy Assistant Secretary of State.

President Ivanov expressed appreciation to Mr. Volker for the accepted invitation to be one of the key speakers at the School for Young Leaders, organized for the third year under his auspices, uniting young and creative force in the society.

Mr. Volker commended this excellent initiative of the President, expressing satisfaction with the highly professional approach used in its implementation and with the given opportunity to be part of it. Both interlocutors also discussed the possibility of establishing cooperation between the School of Young Leaders and McCain Institute for International Leadership, and the need for this initiative to be expanded in regional terms.

President Ivanov said that our region has a need of creating and preparing future leaders, not only in politics, but leaders in all social spheres - economy, environment, culture. Leaders who will build their vision on positive values, responsibility and creativity, and will focus their energy on improving general conditions, progress and collaboration.

At the meeting, the continued development of bilateral relations and strategic partnership between the Republic of Macedonia and the United States was once again confirmed. As the President stressed, the Republic of Macedonia stays firmly on the course of its NATO and EU integration, and that the role of the US as partner, ally and supporter, is highly appreciated.

The blockade to the realization of the strategic goals is unsustainable and it is necessary Greece to be encouraged to make a constructive step, concluded the interlocutors. Mr. Volker, who is dedicated supporter of the efforts of the Republic of Macedonia for a full-fledged membership in NATO, said that following the judgment of the International Court of Justice, the United States, Europe and NATO should make serious efforts Macedonia to be admitted to the Alliance, on the grounds of that decision.

The Macedonian President and Mr. Volker discussed the latest developments in the region and the regional cooperation initiatives, stressing that the integration processes of the countries add additional stimulus to the exchange, cohesion and cooperation in the Balkans.
