Macedonia and Poland nourish excellent relations - official visit of the President of the Republic of Poland, Bronislaw Komorowski
Tuesday, 10 September 2013 14:19

komorovski1Macedonia and Poland nourish excellent bilateral relations, without any open issues, with a possibility to promote economic cooperation. Poland supports and will support Macedonia on its path to the Euro-Atlantic structures, as the stability in the region is not possible without Macedonia's integration, the President of the Republic of Macedonia, Dr. Gjorge Ivanov and the President of the Republic of Poland, Mr. Bronislaw Komorowski, assessed after their meeting today in Skopje.

"Poland has been supporting the Republic of Macedonia for setting a date to launch negotiations for EU membership, as we think that the stabilization of this region is impossible without Macedonia", President Komorowski said.

The support given by Poland to the Euro-Atlantic integration of Macedonia, he added, stems not only from the good friendly relations between the two countries, but also from the determination of Poland of 1989, for an open door policy of the Euro-Atlantic structures.
"There are cases, similar to Macedonia, when candidates were blocked, but a decision was brought for a parallel movement in the resolution of outstanding issues and European integration, and, therefore, we expect the same to apply to us", President Ivanov said, expressing gratitude to Poland for the continued support to Macedonia in this regard, and for the recognition of the constitutional name.

We expect, the Macedonian President added, at the next European Commission Summit and the EU Council to finally set a date for Macedonia to start EU membership negotiations.

"We discussed about the power that the European idea has and the changes caused by the European integration, that it is something that is necessary for our region, too. In this regard, we expect strong support from Poland, because the current situation of status quo in Macedonia's EU integration is in nobody's interest", the Macedonian President said.

He and his Polish counterpart discussed the possibility to promote the excellent and friendly relations between the two countries in several areas, such as science, education, culture, but above all the economic relations.

"Every friendship requires good foundations that rely not only on the historical heritage but also on the good economic cooperation", President Komorowski said.

That is the purpose, he added, of today's Macedonian - Polish business forum, which is to be opened by the two Presidents.

The forum, both Presidents agree, is a good opportunity for close meetings of businessmen to consider the possibilities for boosting economic cooperation.

komorovski2Before the press-conference, President Ivanov, in a ceremony held in Villa Vodno, bestowed his Polish counterpart with the Order "September 8" for his exceptional merits in developing and strengthening of the friendly relations and cooperation between the two countries, as well as in promoting and strengthening of the international position and reputation of the Republic of Macedonia.

The Order "September 8" is awarded as a token of gratitude to the Polish people and the leaders of the Republic of Poland for nurturing and strengthening the relations of friendship and cooperation between the two countries, for the strong support and assistance in the efforts to attain the strategic goals and principled usage of the constitutional name of the Republic of Macedonia.

Polish President Komorowski was welcomed today with the highest state and military honors in Villa Vodno, afterwards had a tête-à-tête meeting with the Macedonian President Ivanov, and there was a plenary meeting of both official delegations.

In presence of both Presidents, Agreement on cooperation in the field of science and higher education between the Ministry of Education and Science of Macedonia and the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of Poland was signed.

The Presidents of the Republic of Macedonia and of the Republic of Poland tomorrow will be in Ohrid, where they will visit several cultural and historical landmarks.

Wednesday, 04 September 2013 16:26

European integration of the Republic of Macedonia and of the region, as well as the assistance expected from the Republic of Croatia following its EU accession in speeding up the process, were the focus of talks at today's meeting in Skopje, between the President of the Republic of Macedonia, Dr. Gjorge Ivanov, and the President of the Republic of Croatia, Dr. Ivo Josipovic.

Both presidents stressed that the accession of Macedonia and of the region in the EU is a strategic interest, there are no open issues between Macedonian and Croatian state, and that economically and politically, it is particularly important to work on the existing joint projects and opening of new ones.

- Macedonia and Croatia are friendly countries, without open issues, with mutual respect, as testified by this visit. We hope that Croatia will still have a constructive role in the efforts for integration of the region into the EU, President Ivanov said at the press-conference after the tête-à-tête meeting with President Josipovic.

The Macedonian President said that he hopes that the initiative with the Brdo Process will continue and that the region will become part of EU with joint efforts and with the aid of Croatia and Slovenia.
As he said, they discussed with Josipovic the possibilities to deepen trade exchaneg, economic cooperation and potentials of both countries.

hrvatska1President Josipovic noted that after Croatia joined the EU, he is paying visits in the region to reiterate the strategic interest not only of Croatia, but also of Europe - Europe to be whole and all those countries which historically, economically and culturally belong to Europe, to be officially part of it, too.

- We see with great support and sympathy Macedonia's efforts to meet all prerequisites and conditions for membership in NATO and the EU. Croatia, political and in every other respect, supports the effort, Croatian President said.
Besides political support for a common future, he said, bilateral, economic, cultural, scientific cooperation is important.

- I am glad to say that our governments work together and there are more and more ideas and projects that bring our two countries closer. Today, when the European crisis is a burden in Europe and in the region, launching new projects and opening new jobs is essential for all of us, not only from an economic standpoint, but also from political, Josipovic said.

He talked with his host about the benefits of the region and the whole of Europe from the implementation of the strategic European projects, such as the so-called Adriatic-Ionian Initiative and the possible highway, saying that he has great expectations of that. - I hope our governments, along with the other, will support this project, will present it to the EU and accede to its implementation, Josipovic said.

Asked what would be the position of Croatia at the EU Council meeting in December regarding Macedonia, Croatia's President said he would support any initiative agreed between Macedonia and Greece, and that the friendly relations Croatia nourishes with Macedonia and Greece can make a favorable climate for an agreement.

- Consensus is always necessary if we consider the way NATO and the EU function. Having this in mind, we encourage consensus and will support any solution in favor of Macedonia. We have excellent relations with Greece, and we expect to have positive relations in future, too. Croatia, having friendly relations with Greece and Macedonia, can probably make a favorable climate for reaching an agreement between these two countries, Josipovic said.

The visit to the Republic of Macedonia is part of a mini tour of President Josipovic in the region. Before coming to Macedonia, he visited Montenegro, and is to travel from Skopje to Kosovo.
