Statement on European Council decision on isa liberalization
Monday, 30 November 2009 00:00

Today is a big day for Macedonia. The European Council decision on visa liberalization for a long time has been expected welcome for our citizens within the community of equal and free citizens of Europe.

The visa liberalization represents a huge step closer to the European Union and increases the feeling of common belonging within the big European family. Europe for decades has been the source of all advanced and democratic ideas for our citizens, very often promoted exactly through the possibility for direct travels. Therefore, I proudly received the news on the final abolition of the visa regime for traveling around Europe. I would like to congratulate all the citizens of the Republic of Macedonia for their patience in the implementation of the necessary reforms which, very often, were painful and hard. The citizens demonstrated their deep understanding that these reforms have been implemented for people’s sake, for their own good.

What we have today is a result of the extraordinary efforts that we have invested in meeting the serious reforms that were required from the Republic of Macedonia. I would like to congratulate all the institutions involved for the swift and thorough implementation of the necessary measures. The Government of the Republic of Macedonia and all competent Ministries and institutions demonstrated that they are on the level of the high standards which were set forth. Allow me to extend my gratitude to all previous administrations for their contribution for what we are celebrating today. We also congratulate the other two countries, which, along with the Republic of Macedonia, managed to achieve this success. I hope that soon the citizens of the other countries in the region shall be able to travel free as well. Our administration is willing to share the positive experiences on this road. At the end, I would like to express satisfaction that the European Union remained faithful to the great vision of united and open continent. The Republic of Macedonia shall continue with the implementation of the reforms, further opening of its society and promotion of the democratic and European values. I believe that, upon the success of today, the assessment of the Republic of Macedonia shall continue until the fulfillment of the set goal – full fledged membership in the community of European countries and nations. I like to convey clearly the message that the Republic of Macedonia and its institutions have both will and capacity, and are fully prepared to start the negotiations for EU membership, and to meet and deal with the challenges borne by this process.

Thank you.
